Mount St. Helens: Washington’s Iconic Active Volcano
Mount St. Helens is an active stratovolcano in the Cascade Range of southwestern Washington. Rising to an elevation of 8,363 feet, the mountain is one of the most recognizable peaks in the Pacific Northwest. Its dramatic crater, rugged volcanic landscape, and remarkable history make it a memorable destination for climbers, hikers, photographers, and outdoor enthusiasts.
Located within the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, Mount St. Helens is part of the Cascade volcanic arc, a chain of mountains and volcanoes extending approximately 800 miles from northern California to southern British Columbia. The Cascade volcanoes were formed by the gradual movement of the Juan de Fuca Plate beneath the North American Plate. This process, known as subduction, produces the magma that has shaped many of the region’s best-known peaks, including Mount Rainier, Mount Adams, Mount Hood, and Mount Baker.
The Historic 1980 Eruption
Mount St. Helens is best known for the catastrophic eruption that occurred on May 18, 1980. At 8:32 a.m., a magnitude 5.1 earthquake triggered the collapse of the mountain’s summit and north flank. The resulting debris avalanche was the largest landslide in recorded history and released a powerful lateral blast that devastated the surrounding landscape.
Before the eruption, Mount St. Helens stood at 9,677 feet and was known for its symmetrical, snow-covered cone. The eruption removed approximately 1,314 feet from the summit, leaving behind the large horseshoe-shaped crater that defines the mountain today.
The lateral blast flattened or damaged forests across approximately 230 square miles, reaching as far as 17 miles from the crater. The eruption claimed the lives of 57 people and sent an ash plume more than 80,000 feet into the atmosphere. Volcanic ash spread across the United States within three days and eventually traveled around the globe.
The eruption permanently changed the mountain and became one of the most significant geological events in modern U.S. history.
A Landscape Still Changing
Mount St. Helens remains an active volcano. After the major 1980 eruption, additional volcanic activity continued through the 1980s. The mountain reawakened again between 2004 and 2008, when lava-dome growth and smaller eruptions reshaped portions of the crater.
Today, the crater contains lava domes and Crater Glacier, a glacier that formed within the shadow of the crater walls. The mountain continues to be closely monitored by scientists and remains an important natural laboratory for studying volcanic activity, ecological recovery, and the long-term effects of major geological events.
Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument
In 1982, Congress established the 110,000-acre Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument to preserve the volcanic landscape and allow natural recovery processes to continue. The surrounding area offers opportunities to explore hiking trails, volcanic features, interpretive sites, and viewpoints overlooking the crater and nearby Spirit Lake.
Mount St. Helens is more than a mountain. It is a lasting symbol of nature’s power, the resilience of the surrounding landscape, and the enduring appeal of the Cascade Range.
